A new year brings a new season at Shakespeare & Company. This year the mix of images span the gamut from film noir to Shakespeare. What I love about this client relationship is that we’ve all worked together for so long that success is an assumption – we all know that our collaboration will bear great fruit. And it is a collaboration, between Marketing Director Elizabeth Aspenlieder, the actors involved in the shoots, Govane Lohbauer and the costume department, and the artistic leadership coming down from Tony Simotes.

Trust in vision, trust in process, and trust in inspiration – trust builds great opportunity and a better product. It also makes the process quick, efficient and cost-effective. The mean timeline on these individual shoots, from concept development to execution and delivery takes just a couple of hours, tops. We know what we are doing.

Mari Provencher’s Circus Photos

Mari Provencher (www.mariprovencher.com) did a short internship at
Studio Two some years back and helped us out with shooting theatre in
the summer at Shakespeare & Co. She’s gone on to other things and is
roaming (apparently) around the country in and around circus culture.
She has a great gallery of photos taken of performers and performances
here http://www.mariprovencher.com/circus/# which is really
interesting and unusual. The image I’ve attached to this post is just
a knockout. Clearly, these are two performers taking a break, chatting
backstage, but their look is almost 19th century, and the lighting and
expression of the woman on the left is cinematic. This feels like it
would be at home in high-concept fashion book with its tension between
the mundane and the extraordinary. It makes we want to know more,
which is really (for me) the mark of an interesting photograph, a
moment in time that connects to a story. Great work Mari! I hope many
more people see this.

Here’s the result of my Alphonse Mucha inspiration project. This image will be used for the inaugural season of the new Tennessee Shakespeare Company. I like the way it came out, and although inspired by the Mucha artwork, it is still my own, and represents how I see the world. Thanks to Brittany Morgan for her willing and able participation!

I’m working on an image for “As You Like It” and hoping to channel Alphonse Mucha on this one. One of my favorite illustrators from the early part of the last century and a fixture in our household growing up (his work, that is), our family has had a long connection to this artist. At one point in the ’20′s or ’30′s my great-grandmother was a kind of patron to Mucha and ever since his presence and work has been around me.
Pretty girls and flowers. Always seems to work. But beyond that there is so much style in the work, so much motion and design and great typography. Stay tuned. Let’s see what happens!

I’ve self-published a new book that shows a comprehensive look at all of the work that I have done for Shakespeare & Company for the last 15 years. I had a lot of fun digging through my archives to find all this great stuff. It is 280 pages, 8.5×11 softcover and hardcover, full color throughout. Presently I’m working on how to do a 2,000 copy run, which I think is about the right number to satisfy demand for a while and also brigs the per-copy price down.
