I make these images by compositing photos I have shot of flowers and other elements with antique postcards that I have collected in my travels. Most postcard collectors are interested in the front – the display side – but I hunt out the interesting reverse – the message side. In particular, I am drawn to interesting text, pithy sayings and sentimental remarks, and beautiful old handwriting. The handwriting tells so much, so quickly – like hair styles in an old movie or the cut of clothes, handwriting is evidence of its time. The people who wrote trained in copperplate, or with calligraphy pens, or even quills – the stroke and bend and curve tells so much. What do we leave behind for history that tells the future about our time as individuals on the planet – what ephemera, or personal memento that speaks to your essential humanity. Does a tweet become poetic in time? I wonder.
